The process of changing where screenshots are saved depends on the OS you’re currently running on your Mac. If you are using Mojave OS, then you can simply open Screenshot app and change it. If you are using sierra or any earlier OS, you have to change it using the Terminal app.

Follow the below steps to know how to change where screenshots are saved on Mac which has Mojave OS or later ones.

  • On the dock, you will be able to see an icon that is half blue and half white coloured. This is a finder tool. Click on it.
  • Now select Go and then tap on Utilities.
  • Now, look out for the screenshot app and open it.
  • You can also directly open the screenshot app by pressing and holding command + shift + 5.
  • On the top bar, you will be able to see options. Tap on it and a menu pop-up will open with multiple options to select.
  1. Desktop: This default setting makes the screenshots save on the desktop page.
  2. Documents: The screenshots will be saved to your Documents folder with the date and time format as the file name.
  3. Clipboard: If you select this setting, you can paste the screenshot on any app which lets you to edit the images.
  4. Mail: If you select this setting, it will automatically compose a new mail with the screenshot as the image attached.
  5. Messages: If you select this setting, it will attach the screenshot image to the message where you can send it to any contact on your list.
  6. Preview: This is the Mac photo editing tool. Selecting this setting will let you open the screenshot on this app by default.
  7. Other location: If you want to save your screenshots to any separate folder, you can do this by selecting this setting.
  • Select any of the above options. This setting will be applied every time you do a screenshot on your Mac.

Follow the below steps to know how to change where screenshots are saved on Mac which has High Sierra or earlier OS.

  • On the dock, you will be able to see an icon that is half blue and half white coloured. This is a finder tool. Click on it.
  • Now select Go and then tap on Utilities
  • Look out for the Terminal app and click on it.
  • Enter the below command and space after that. (Space after the ‘location’ word)

               defaults write com.apple.screencapture location

  • Now select the folder where you want the screenshots to be saved and drag it to the terminal app.
  • Now another command line will be automatically added.
  • Tap on Enter on your keyboard now.
  • Now, type the below command

                killall SystemUIServer

  • Tap on ‘Enter’ now. That’s it. From next time when you screenshot anything, it will be automatically saved to the folder you selected.
